Historic Preservation

The Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) was created to protect and preserve cultural resources of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska to ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to learn about and embrace their unique cultural heritage.

The THPO identifies, evaluates, and protects historic, archaeological, and other cultural resources across the Ponca's historic homeland.

NAGPRA Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act NHPA § 106 National Historic Preservation Act — Section 106 NEPA National Environmental Policy Act ARPA Archaeological Resources Protection Act

Section 106 Consultation

Consulting with outside agencies as required through Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act to protect and preserve Ponca cultural resources that may be affected by federal undertakings.

NAGPRA Compliance

Serving as the primary contact for any Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) issues — including the repatriation and reburial of human remains and pursuing Ponca items of cultural patrimony in museums.

Tribal Register of Historic Places

Maintaining a Tribal Register of Historic Places with up-to-date information on the various Ponca cultural resources included in the register.

Public Education & Training

Providing public information, education, training, and technical assistance to the Tribal Historic Preservation Program, other departments, and tribal members.

Tribal Archives & Museum

Assisting with the maintenance of the Tribal Archives and Museum.

Consultation with the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is governed by the policies and procedures laid out by Tribal Council. All outside agencies consulting through the National Historic Preservation Act, National Environmental Project Act, and other applicable federal laws are required to follow consultation as laid out in those policies and procedures.
